The Super Friends, part 1: Humble beginnings

Oct 25, 2000 - © Jeff Sparkman

This series laid the groundwork for all of the successive seasons. The SF's headquarters, the Hall of Justice, was plunked down in the middle of downtown Metropolis, Superman's stomping grounds. Interestingly, in a few episodes, the main meeting room of the Hall of Justice appears to be upstairs. None of the other episodes in later seasons seemed to reinforce this idea. It always just looked as if they were on the ground floor.

The TroubAlert (later Trouble Alert -- The SF was ahead of their time with the fancy mid-name capitalization so prevalent these days) was how the SF found out what was going down.

Colonel Wilcox was one of their frequent contacts, though we weren't sure exactly why. None of the great villains made it in this show, no Joker, Lex Luthor, Bizarro -- this would come later. A few bright spots came when special guest heroes appeared. Green Arrow (in his only cartoon appearance to date) and Plastic Man (who would, a few years later, get his own cartoon) stopped by on occasion and were usually the only reasons to watch. Sure, the stories might have been less-than-earth-shattering, but superheroes were back on television, and it would only get better as time went on, especially when they dumped Wendy, Marvin and Wonderdog.
