Alcohol Awareness And Our Kids (2)

I tell ya’, coming of age in the 70's is nothing compared to the new millenium. There are designer drugs that are much scarier than the LSD of those days. Crack and Meth didn’t exist either. I can’t tell you how many news articles I have read that talk about binge drinking among college age kids and the senseless deaths that have come out of that practice. Not to mention the unsafe sex and deaths attributed to driving while drunk.

At Focus Adolescent Services alcohol page are some pretty frightening statistics. I quote: “Alcohol is the drug used most often by high school seniors. Even though such students cannot legally buy alcohol, over 90% of them have tried alcohol and almost one-third of them report that they have had more than 5 drinks at one time (binge drinking) in the past two weeks. With college students, over 40% report recent heavy drinking. On one college campus, an informal survey indicated over 90% of first-year students had drunk to intoxication in the previous month. “ There are a ton of links on this page, all aimed at teens and their parents.

If you wonder about Adolescent Experimentation this a short factual article that will give you some insight and a place to begin a talk with your teen. In fact, the entire documnet on Substance Abuse is an eye opener. Steroid abuse along with alcohol, drugs and tobacco are discussed. There is even a page dedicated to Binge Drinking: The Facts

National Clearinghouse for Drug and Alcohol Information has a section dedicated to” “Growing Up Drug Free: A Parent's Guide To Prevention” Aimed at the parents of younger children who are just starting out, you can find suggestions about how to discuss your values with you kids and setting rules around drug and alcohol use. Another site at NCADI Is about Youth: Facts about Attitudes and Use. It may open you eyes to what our young people are really facing.

I want to close this series with Hope and Healing. “...More than a site, a vision for hope and healing." Read about “healing addiction and spiritual ailments and on raising our children with creativity and tender care.” I suggest you check out the Just for Teens page.
