Back in 1998, Journalist Bill Moyers did a series for PBS on Addiction. "This Web companion piece features original reporting by health journalist Janet Firshein, animated illustrations, and much more."
Reports on science, treatment, prevention, and policy (the political aspects of addiction) offer food for thought. Scattered through the personal stories of alcoholics/addicts there are links to how to identify if an individual or family has a problem. You need to take into consideration that the site is 2 years old and doesn't appear to have been updated with the latest and greatest addiction discoveries. Still it offers solid general information that can be useful. "Overboard", a 13 issue "soap opera comic book" tells the tale of five teens facing choices about drugs, alcohol, cigarettes and life. Head Docs which used to be "Ask Dr. Steve", represents "an experienced team of top-notch health professionals who specialize in helping people whose Addictive Behaviors & Obsessions can cause mental and physical pain. Our site created and operated by seasoned experts who have seen and heard it all, is here to help you sort out what's healthy and what's harmful, what's passion and what's Obsession or Addiction." Topics include sex, mind/body, mind, love, work/play, money, body, spirit/soul, and hi-tech. When I clicked on the "Smoking, Drinking and Getting High" link, I was directed to the Mind Forum for the psychological aspects, the Body Forum for the physical and medical dimensions, and the Love Forum for impacts on loved ones. I discovered Working With Drug Addicts by accident. This essay, originally published in Modern Drummer magazine, focuses on working around active addicts in the music industry. The authors aim is to offer "some helpful perspective and advice for those who are struggling with this situation, or those who simply wish to know more about it." While the article is written about musicians, parallels can be drawn for any industry where an addict may surface. Driving Under the Influence presents "all sorts of information about driving under the influence of alcohol and other drugs." Learn about "drunk and drugged driving, why it is a problem, how it works, and what you can do to help stop it. At Getting Personal you will find "interviews with people who have had first-hand experiences with drunk driving." I found an interesting pamphlet Growing Up Drug Free: A Parents Guide To Prevention at AtHealth.Com. It is full of reality based information for Parents and children. There is even a section on "What to say when your child asks, 'Did you ever use drugs?'" Go To Page: 1 2
