New Year for All

Well, it's that time of year again.

Yes folks, time to get those pens and pencils, paper and notbooks, planners and get back to our favorite place of all: school.

For us journalism folks it is also a new year for the school newspaper. If you read my column from this summer, you might already have some great ideas for having a great school paper this year. For the next few columns, I will discuss different aspects of the school newspaper, and how you can get started on the right foot.

With every newspaper, there is a need for finances. This is where advertising comes in. In this column I will discuss tips on advertising.

  • Have a buisness staff - Have one or two people exclusively in charge of advertising. It will be easier and less overwhelming to advertisers if there are only a few people selling ads.

  • Search for businesses that advertised in your newspaper last year. Clip the ads they have to show when trying to sell ads to them again.

  • Look out for potential advertisers in the area around your school. They will be more likely to advertise then a business that is across town.

  • Arrange a day for your buisness to advertise to local buisness. Split the area up between your staff.

  • Have your advertising tactics ready. Figure out how to present to your potential advertiser, what information to give them, and what supplies you will need.

  • When coming to an advertiser, tell who you are and the school you are representing

Advertising is no easy task. However, if you plan things correctly and figure things out, advertising can bring your newspaper the money it needs to publish!
