If you have been in journalism for a while, you might have heard about having a portfolio.

What is a portfolio? A portfolio is a collection of your best work. In the case of journalism, it is a collection of the best newspaper/magazine pieces you have written over the years. You may also hear your portfolio collection being refered to as clips.

This article will discuss suggestions on starting your portfolio, but sites such as "Jobspage" by the Detroit Free press may provide more information. You can get more information of clips and portfolio as well as other career aspects of journalism by going here: http://www.freep.com/jobspage/toolkit/in....

So you want to make your portfolio? Let's get started.

1. Get out ALL the articles you have done. This can be for any publication; your school paper, your newsletters, magazines, anything. If it's a piece of good writing, it's good enough for your portfolio.

2.Organize your clips in some way. This could be by publication, date, type of article etc. The more organized your clips are the more organized your overall portfolio will be.

3. Find a folder/binder to use as your portfolio. It can be as simple as a three ring binder or even a notebook folder. Just make sure it's efficent and practical.

4. Find a way to paste/attach articles in your binder The best way is to paste the articles carefully on blank 3-hole paper, and place them in the binder.

5. When choosing articles, make sure you have variety as well as quality. By choosing different styles of articles, you can show a wide-range of high-quality skills.

These five tips are simple, but it should help you get started. If you need more help or information, go to the Freep Jobspage at http://www.freep.com/jobspage/toolkit/in...

Good luck and I hope that your portfolios will help advance your journalism career!
