Journalism beyond the pen and paper (part two)In my last article, I covered some of the ways where the Internet can be useful to the aspiring journalist. Again in this article, I will cover useful things the aspriring jounalist can do on the Web. This article will cover journalism school information and resources for news stories. JOURNALISM SCHOOLS The Internet is a good resource for finding journalism schools. For those who are in high school looking for the right journalism college, the Internet can provide infomation. Start at the basic college prep sites such as Kaplan (http://www.kaplan.com) or Princeton Review (http://www.review.com) to check out college search engines for colleges that have a journalism major. Next, check out each journalism school. Check out their newspapers online if they have one. Check out the alumni of the j-school. Even better, e-mail alumni for information they can give to you about the school. See if you can e-mail present journalism students at the college. Some colleges offer summer programs. Look into those - they can be great ways to visit the college and check out the faculty of a certain journalism school. USEFUL RESOURCES FOR YOUR STORIES Have you ever done a story for your school newspaper and you need to do some research but didn't know where to start? The Internet could be a great resource. The best site I have found for this is FACSNET (http://www.facsnet.org). FACSNET offers information on major issues in the news, links for journalists, sources you can talk to and more. In fact, if this article doesn't do it for you, FACSNET offers a more in-depth article on their web site. The only requirement is that you're a member of the web site, which is free. Although there are not really any other site that is as coprehensive as FACSNET, there is potential in the web sites of journalism magazines. They offer lots of information and ways to obtain information. Check out the Columbia Jouralism Review (http://www.cjr.org), American Journalism Review (http://www.ajr.com) and Online Journalism Review (http://www.ojr.com). Conclusion This is just a bit of what an journalist can do to their advantage. The Internet is full of information for journalists. As with anything, how useful the Internet is to a journalist depends on how useful they make it.
