MentorsIn the last article, I wrote about how a high school student can get some major experience. Another thing any wannabe journalist should do is get a mentor. Mentors are usually ones who are already working or teaching in the field. In this article you will learn how you can get a mentor and how a mentor can benefit you. HOW TO GET A MENTOR Geting a mentor isn't as hard as you think. You can get a mentor in a variety of ways. From Journalism Workshops: Your instructors can be great mentors. Remember at the end of the workshop to get contact infomation from your instructors so you can keep in contact with them. Also when you're at a workshop don't forget to get the contact infomation of guest speakers as well. They can also serve as great mentors. From Mentoring programs: Many of the formal journalism organzationss offering a mentoring service for free or a small fee. One such organzation that does that is the Asian-American Journalists Association. Check out your local/national journalism organizations to see if they have a mentoring program. Other Ways: Look online for journalists that are online or have e-mail. I have found mentors online. They can serve as great mentors to you! Of course make sure it's okay to send e-mails or chat with them! The Benefits: There are many benefits of having a mentor. 1. PROFESSIONAL IN ACTION - Having a mentor can help you see a journalist in action. You can learn from their victories as well as their mistakes. 2. ON THE HAND ADVICE - Anything you need to know, your mentor can help you. You can ask about writing or journalism colleges or anything concerning journalism. They can give the anwsers you need. 3. CONTACTS - Your mentor could be a future contact for job/internship opportunities. They can help you get your first job or take you to programs that can help you. So what are you waiting for? Get a mentor!
