The Point of Realization

Coming up with the right answer of what to do next is not always that easy. Usually knowing what the best thing is to do is discovered through research which in all sense of the word could also be considered a journey for the character. A character takes a journey just as we do to come up with the best the answer to solve the problem they have. That is the next stage in the story telling process. It could also be considered the moment of realization for the character. This moment of realization is the shining light of knowledge for the character when they become fully aware of the truth of what has actually been going on around them. They see something they didn't see before. Without some sort of realization there is no way to go on to the next step.
In Bedazzled, directed by Harold Ramis, Elliot wants friends, and he knows he wants to be with Allison. His biggest problem is knowing how to get Allison and how to keep her. Elliot becomes attracted to the devil because he wants friends, and the people whom he works with don't treat him well, so it makes it easy for the devil, lovely Elizabeth Hurley, to move in. So Elliot friends situation is solved.
And with the help of the devil, questions arise for Elliot throughout the movie, being the biggest: What does Allison want in a man? That is what the devil wants Elliot to concentrate on, what Allison wants in a man.
Elliot Richards, while exploring many personalities and career opportunities; in which he is a Mexican drug lord, a Sensitive Beach boy, a NBA player, a writer and president of the United States, learns more about himself. He learns what he needs and in some cases feels. That is because as Elliot explores each of his wishes he comes back with more and more questions about what is transpiring. Through all this Elliot also learns what the devil is really interested in (he knows she is interested in his soul but never fully comprehends it at first) and what he wants.
When Elliot realizes that this deal he made with the devil just is not working and won't give him what he wants, he knows there is only one thing to do, stop the madness of trying to get Allison. For Elliot, in this case, it leaves him with one unused wish, and the knowledge full well that the devil will come looking for him. How else do you know he does this, he goes to work, or goes back to his normal life. And why does he do this? Because now that he as acquired as this knowledge he as to decide how to handle the situation. But the first thing he does to proceed to this step is he says "No" to the devil.
