Each character has its own characteristics. It is what makes the character that which he or she is. The story is about all of the characters, good and bad. The best way to learn about stories is to study them by watching them and reading them.
Let us examine the characters of A Knight's Tale written, produced and directed by Brian Helgeland.
The characters are:
Sir William Thatcher/Sir Ulrich Von Lichtenstein of Gelderland - He is the hero with a goal, he sees something he wants and he goes after it. He wants to reach for the stars. He is a visionary and he sees beyond what everyone else sees. He also has great compassion. He uses his resources and at times it showed. Because he has desires and loves a specific sport, he understands other people's desires.
Count Adhemar of Anjou - He is superior and pompous. Things are entitled to him because he is who he is because of stature. He doesn't care about the peasants; in fact the peasants get what they deserve. No one can rise above their class. For him everything is for the taking. He pillages and plunders to gain more. He is the nemesis.
Jocelyn - She knows when she captures a man's eye, but does not want a man who is attracted to her just for her beauty. She doesn't want false giving's. She wants a man who can stand on equal footing with her. She wants a man who will give up everything to have her hand to prove their love. She doesn't care about status or class. She wants to know that a man will give up as much to have her, and she would to have him.
Geoffrey Chaucer, Sir William's Herald - Flowery of speech who speaks boldly. He spins stories, and knows when he is hearing one. He likes attention and he loves risk for Chaucer is also a gambler. He loves words and talks over people's heads.
Kate the Ferrier - A woman working is a man's world, and feminist. She believes a woman can do a man's job and she is the best at hers. She expects to be asked to do something and not expected to do it.
Roland, Sir William's Squire - He is always questioning what is the risk involved, and what is fair. He is looking ahead. He is often the character that offers good advice. He also acts as the father figure.
