By the end of 1976 it had been decided that if Last Exit was to ever make a run at the big time, they would need to relocate to London. As synchronicity would have it, the very night of Last Exit's farewell gig in Newcastle, another band, Curved Air, was playing in town. Curved Air's drummer, depressed with his band's career arc (which they were near the end of), decided to go into town to forget his troubles by checking out some of the local talent. He was referred (by local rock journalist Phil Sutcliffe--see bibliography) to Last Exit's show; and while he was unimpressed with the band as a whole, the bassist/singer's presence and individualistic vocal delivery caught his eye. Shortly the drummer would contact Sting about a project which had been fermenting in his mind. The drummer's name was Stewart Copeland, and the project he'd been considering already had a name: The Police.
Return next month for the second installment of Flexible Strategies: "An Arresting New Development."
