Gift Giving 2000

Many people around the world are celebrating holidays in December, and many of those folks are Sting fans! So what do you buy for the discriminating fan in your life?

I've got a few suggestions, with the help of a few other fans and Sting web site owners.

If the Sting lover in your life doesn't already belong to Outlandos, Sting's fan club, then a membership to this club is your first order of business. Even though fans in the U.S. don't benefit as much as British or European fans, the Outlandos membership is still well worth the annual fee (from $15 to $30, depending on the exchange rate).

For beginners, check out Stingchronicity. If you look at the site map, you'll find an entire "red" section filled to the gills with info on Sting releases, collectibles, books, bootlegs, multimedia, and more. Get Outlandos details here.

CDNow has a host of Sting music for sale, including the expected CD singles, imports, soundtracks, and compilations. Perhaps the most intriguing selections are CDNow's extensive list of Sting song remakes. Want the George Michael remake of "Roxanne"? Or how about Aswad's reggae remake of "Invisible Sun"? [Cheb Mami sings on another of Aswad's songs on this Roots Revival CD.] Be sure to listen to the audio versions of these remakes before you get your major credit card ready.

Amazon, sadly, has a painfully incomplete selection of Sting items, but you can buy Sting's MTV Unplugged video or the Brand New Day video filmed at the Universal Amphitheater in Los Angeles. Most of the books available there are ones worth avoiding.

Choice Mall has a few interesting selections, including the "Bring on the Night" collector edition video, the soundtrack from Grave Indiscretion, or the "All This Time" CD-ROM. Do your homework before buying something from this site, though, because I've found certain items at eBay or other sites for less. If you're pressed for time and money is no object, then by all means, SPEND!

The Sting Store has a few different selections, some nice T-shirts, posters, and CDs.

For more ideas, consider visiting Sting Etc., where Marisa Meisters has put together an interesting gift guide, including lists of Stewart Copeland and Andy Summers gifts. The Sting Etc. guide also has links to buying Sting biographies, such as A Sting in the Tale, which was released only in the UK.

Sting.Compaq.com has a gift store at their site, with items ranging from $7.95 to $250.00. A few of the items seem unique, such as the metal tour badge and the bucket cap.
