Emperor's New Groove

I’m not clever as I thought I was / I’m not the boy I used to be because / You showed me something different / You showed me something pure / I always seemed so certain but I was really never sure / But you stayed and you called my name / When others would have walked out on a lousy game

--Sting, "My Funny Friend and Me"

Disney’s newest animated feature, Emperor’s New Groove, opens in American theaters December 15.

"Outrageous comedy reigns supreme in a mythical mountain kingdom," Disney says of the Peruvian/Incan influence in this movie. When young emperor Kuzco, finds himself on the receiving end of a cruel twist of fate and magic and is left stranded in the jungle, he must join forces with an unlikely compadre—a lowly peasant named Pacha.

This Odd Couple in the Jungle works together in order for Kuzco to return home, end the spell that reduced him to a llama, reclaim his empire, and resume his regal lifestyle. Disney’s site describes the storyline this way: "This most unlikely duo must deal with hair-raising dangers, wild comic predicaments, and—most horrifying—each other as they race to return Kuzco to the throne."

Sting had written six songs when the film was billed as "Kingdom of the Sun." Not only is Sting a multiple award-winning musician and lyricist (and a very hot commodity right now), one in a series of talented Disney soundtrack musicians, but his history with the Rainforest Foundation may have made him a perfect candidate to contribute to the soundtrack. And Sting's youngest children might enjoy hearing their daddy sing in another movie targeted to their age group.

"I was approached by Disney to write a number of songs for an animated feature," Sting says in a mini-video at the Disney site. "I was very excited about it. To be asked to write a song…I was deeply flattered.

"I wrote the beginning song and the end song. They’ve used some of the themes of the songs in the movie. The final song is a buddy song, between Pacha and Kuzco, ‘My Funny Friend and Me.’

"It’s really their story," Sting says while background footage of him and Kenny Kirkland runs. "I quite like the buddy song, and I’m not too sentimental.

"It’s been a three-year journey. It’s up to the public now. If they like what we’ve done, then I’ll be happy."

Both versions of the Emperor’s New Groove soundtrack, to be released on November 14, can be purchased through Amazon.com: The standard soundtrack is available for $12.58 and the original soundtrack sells for $13.99.
