The state of Florida is one that encourages shared parenting whenever possible, giving equal consideration to mothers and fathers. The expectations and responsibilities of both are discussed at Shared Parenting After Divorce.

At the Shared Parenting site, there are news stories, surveys, statistics, a court watch, links to other sites, the opportunity to submit e-mail or take part in chats, and an invitation to join the Forum.

At Shared Parenting--the Arguments for, some strong points are presented, including the following:

  • Reassures the child that he or she has two parents
  • Dispels the notion that only one parent is "caring"
  • One parent is not unfairly burdened with responsibilities
  • Reassures the child that if something happens to a parent, he or she has somewhere to go.

Arguments are presented about shared parenting, but Shared Parenting--Overcoming the Arguments deals with them effectively. The article anwers the claim that having two residences will confuse children by pointing out that kids need "predictability rather than geographic stability." The myth about fathers not being able to care for children, which should have totally disappeared by now, is dealt with, as is the false claim that children will be distressed by being away from the mother.

Some other topics that are myths are dealt with and answered in "Overcoming the Arguments":

  • Children are upset by seeing the other parent
  • Child is unable to cope with different attitudes
  • Parents are unable to co-operate
  • Shared parenting should only occur if the parents agree

As for the mom who has the enviable situation where she shares parenting with her son's stepmother, read her delightful account at The Friendly Divorce.
