STEPPARENTS WORKING AT HOME: PART ONE

An article that discusses a situation involving a home-based stepfather, the benefits and the difficulties, is Stay at Home Parents. The author emphasizes that the stepfather is not a "mother substitute," and describes how they worked out their situation. In addition, there are links to the fathers' web ring, the Parents At Home forum, and personal stories from stay at home parents.

Although the site doesn't deal specifically with stepparenting, At Home Dad offers suggestions for the stay at home father, plus a quarterly newsletter for subscribers.

At Stay at Home Mom, Suite 101.com Contributing Editor Kelli Cole has written helpful articles on a number of topics of interest to parents who work at home. Some of the recent ones include "Feeling Lonely," "Trying to be Organized," and "Making the Transition."

Staying at Home: Advantages and Disadvantages is an excellent article that gives the stepparent and biological parent ideas to consider about working at home. For example, included in the advantages is the fact that the parents know the children are with someone who loves them (or at least is very fond of them) and can keep an eye on how things are going. Another advantage is that the parent and stepparent aren't exhausting themselves trying to balance work and family.

The main disadvantage to being home is loneliness. The stepparent is new to the family, and possibly was employed outside the home before the marriage. There is a lack of contact with former friends at work, and it takes a while to make new friends in the neighborhood. Stay-at-home dads may have difficulty finding other fathers living nearby.
