The story begins with the discovery of and ancient artifact found in the 1920's in the desert of Egypt. A two story metal ring in craved with 39 images was unlike anything anyone had seen.
It was not until almost 70 years later when a young archeologist named Dr. Daniel Jackson , recruited by the head of the stargate project Dr. Catherine Langford. She was a child when here father found the gate and was there when it was unearthed. After she brings in Dr. Jackson to help with solving the mystery of the gate the military is brought in , in the form of Air Force Col. Jack O'Neil. Brought out of retirement following the accidental death of his son , he takes control of the project to oversee it's success and it's potental threat.
Dr. Does in fact find the key to accessing this metal ring now know as the stargate. He found that each image on the stargate was in fact constellations in the night sky and that this metal ring was in fact a doorway that would lead to travelling to another world. By inputting a series of six symbols with the seven being the point of origin or home planet , Dr. Jackson was able to activate the gate taking them to a new world.
When they stepped through the gate it transported them to another galaxy and onto the world which would become known as Abydos. A world filled with people and pyramids living a way of life much like the ancient Egyptians of earth who were enslaved to a mysterious being that took on the identity of the Egyptian Sun God Ra.
When the team including Dr. Jackson , Col. Jack O’Neil and a team of others come in contact with the local people they are mistaken as Gods , allies to the Sun God Ra. They were treated like kings and given the best including Dr. Jackson who was given the daughter of the elder/leader Kasuf. It was this woman Sha're who would lead Dr. Jackson to understand how her people came to be on this planet and why the gate on earth was buried.
It appears that long ago a alien being found that his race and he was dying. He came across a planet filled with life forms , he came across earth. While on earth he took over the body of a young native boy a took to ruling over the planet and making himself there God and turning the people into slaves. It was not until one day when the people rose up against Ra and buried the gate was he driven from earth to the planet Abydos , taking with him a small amount of slaves.
