As a fringe Star Wars fan, I haven't really paid attention to all that has taken place in the Star Wars universe outside of the movies. Until recently.
It all started when I decided I wanted to read The Phantom Menace, written by Terry Brooks. How could I resist the combination of one of my favorite fantasy writers tackling one of my favorite science fiction stories? I couldn't, so I didn't. I waited until I had seen the movie. I didn't want the plot spoiled for me. Then I ran right out to the library and picked up a copy of the book. I wasn't sure if I wanted to own it yet. I wasn't ready to make the commitment. I enjoyed reading it immensely. Although the plot followed that of the movie very closely, the book offered some new material. There were some additional scenes and some places where I could listen to a character's thoughts or have a plot point explained in more detail than would be allowed in a movie. When it came out in paperback, I bought it. When the next book came out, Rogue Planet by Greg Bear, I had to read it. My husband bought it for me for Christmas, and I read the entire book in less than a week. (Being that I'm a stay-at-home mom with two boys, that's pretty darn good.) Excellent book, of which I have a review here, in the articles section. My husband also read Rogue Planet, and so began his foray into the additional Star Wars stories. For someone who has never been very interested in reading, my husband became insatiable for the "next" Star Wars book. He had the original trilogy books, purchased when each was first released in paperback. He reread Star Wars for the first time in 20 years, but wouldn't read the next book in the series. He kept insisting there was another book written between Star Wars and The Empire Strikes Back. One day, we found it. We were shopping in a used book store, and my husband was checking out their Star Wars selection when he saw it, Splinter of the Mind's Eye. He took the book home and devoured it. He's been reading through each successive book as quickly as he can ever since. I've decided to follow his lead. I've now finished Star Wars and Splinter of the Mind's Eye and have started on The Empire Strikes Back. But I need to hurry through the original trilogy stories, which I know all too well from the movies, and start on some new material, like The Truce at Bakura and The Courtship of Princess Leia.
