The Next Anakin Skywalker

At last, the most pressing question on the minds of Star Wars fans has been answered. Nineteen-year-old Hayden Christensen will play Anakin.

At the end of Episode 1, Anakin was still a nine-year-old boy, preparing to be trained in the Jedi arts by young Obi-Wan Kenobi, who had only recently completed training himself.

But it's not likely that's where Episode 2 will begin. A time jump of approximately 10 years is expected, years that will turn Anakin the cute little boy into Anakin the gorgeous young man. The man who will win Queen Amidala's heart.

Star Wars is about to move its saga into barely tested waters--romance. Now all you purists out there are saying, "What about the romance between Han Solo and Princess Leia?" To you, I say, Yes, it was there, it was acknowledged in the storyline, but it was also about as chaste as a 1950's family sit com. Forget about twin beds, I couldn't imagine those two sleeping in the same room.

This will be different. According to what is known about the first three movies, Amidala is expected to become pregnant with Anakin's babies, the twins who become Luke and Leia. This indicates a romance between the characters, one that will most likely be a major plot point in the movie. Up to now, character relationships, especially romantic entanglements, have been secondary to action sequences and special effects. Now sparks should be flying between the young lovers rather than between light sabers.

Does Christensen fit into the Anakin of my imagination? I'm not sure yet. I haven't seen him act, but I see a lot of intensity in those blue eyes of his in the still photos. He's definitely a good-looking young man.

To be fair, though, physical appearance isn't as important as chemistry between the main characters. Several young actors screen-tested and read with Natalie Portman, who's slated to continue her role as Amidala. So I'm keeping an open mind about the actor selected to be Anakin. I'm putting my faith in casting director Robin Gurland, as well as in George Lucas himself, to create a couple to burn up the screen.

I look forward to seeing how they do.
