The Wesley Question

Now, I admit I'm taking a leaf out of Chris Jones's book here, by basing an article on a discussion, but I hope you don't mind Chris. Wesley Crusher splits fans into 2 categories, those who like him as a character, and those who really, really hate him. There are few (if any) people who have limited views about him; he's that sort of character. Wesley Robert Crusher is the son of Dr. Beverly Crusher & Lt. Cmdr. Jack Crusher. He was born on July 29th 2349. Jack Crusher was killed on an away mission while on the Stargazer (under the command of Captain Picard) when Wesley was only 5. He moved to the Enterprise along with his mother (who was to become the chief medical officer). Picard initially gave him a hard time, he shouted at him when he arrived on the bridge in the turbo lift, and then when Wesley left the holodeck after slipping into he water and making the deck floor wet. This was, in my opinion, the first scientific bug in the show; Wesley leaves the holodeck with HOLOGRAPHIC water, which still exists outside the holodeck. But I'm not going to complain, it's a nice extra to the episode, and the writers should be able to break the rules, since they made them. He was granted a field commission to acting ensign by Captain Picard. He failed his first attempt at the Starfleet entry exam, where he was beaten by a Benzite, whose name escapes me. He did however gain a high enough grade to reapply the following year. He was granted a field commission to full ensign after missing his transport to Starfleet Academy, due to his involvement in the rescue of some of the Enterprise crewmembers. In general Wesley was "perfect", he never did anything wrong, never showed any signs of misbehaviour i.e. normal teenage things. This is the main reason as to why a lot of people have difficulty relating to him. But he did eventually have a flaw, during his first year at the academy he became a member of "Nova Squadron", this is a squadron of elite pilots who regularly practice dangerous formation flying. There was an accident while performing an illegal starburst manoeuvre, which lead to the death of a fellow pilot. They tried to cover it up at the board of inquiry, but eventually he confessed (a resemblance to Tom Paris?). Mainly due to this incident he resigned from Starfleet, and went to live with the colonists on Dorvan 5, where he met up with the traveller and joined him on his "supernatural" trips.
