The Borg: Part 1

With the advent of the new series it was necessary not only to beef up the older and more outdated alien races, e.g. the Klingons who in THG were given not only a more elaborate social structure but more importantly with the new foreheads. Every time this fact comes up the program it is answered purely with a look designed to hide embarrassment on the part of the Klingons. As a result we will never know, since the script writers can't think of a really good reason and also it adds a new mystique to their race, but also to create many new and in some cases wacky races. Over the course of their series they encounter a great many number of races, many of which are infact serving aboard the enterprise

Out of these many races one stands tall above all of the others.... The Borg. They are a collection of cybernetic organisms; this is a theme which has been used in many films and TV series. Over time humanity has developed not only a fascination with such creatures, but also a great fear. This is evident in films such as the Terminator series of films and to a lesser extent in the Matrix. Both of these factors are manipulated and played upon by Paramount in TNG. The Borg strike fear into the hearts of everyone who face them. Not only this but they are also the best-looking race out of any conceived. The idea that they have no individual minds, but yet they serve a collective conscience. People fear the loss of their individuality and the fact that they would be forced to work against their will in the Borg quest to conquer the galaxy and unite it under a banner of one mind and one species, that of the cybernetic organisms. They make numerous appearances in not only TNG but also in Voyager, in which they form a VERY, VERY unrealistic alliance with the Borg. The Borg were first introduced to the Federation by Q, who thought it would be a nice gesture to warn them of the oncoming invasion by the Borg. This gave the federation some time in which to prepare for this. Which tested their skills and new technology to the limit at the battle of Wolf 359 in 2366
