The fans and the history of "Star Trek"At the end of my last article I said that I would be beginning my cast analysis's this time, so unsurprisingly you're probably expecting me to be writing about a character, maybe Worf, Riker or even Picard, however, these will all be coming to your screen in the near future. But this time I am focusing on the history of "Star Trek" but first something more important, quite probably the most important part of the show, and it is, (drum roll), the fans. Without these the show would never have run on so long, it fact it would never have run past it's first series in the 60s. The series would have been cancelled due to the appalling viewing figures that would have ensued, and it would have been replaced with something else. But, fortunately, they did exist and they watched this great new program avidly, and it increased in leaps and bounds. It expanded into new seasons of "The Original series". After this Gene Roddenbery went on, to create the second incarnation of the Star Trek family, "Star Trek TNG" ("The Next Generation"). Along with "TNG", came the creation of the series of films. This brought the world of StarTrek to the big screen, it brought new life into the old series. However, more recently the fans began to be drawn away by other sci-fi and fantasy series, and so Paramount decided to take a hint from "Buffy the Vampire Slayer's" books and introduced of 7 of 9 to Voyager in order to solve the problem of the show's falling ratings. This did infact do it, and Voyager completed its 4th and 5th series. Now I'm not saying that the introduction of 7 of 9 was purely for that reason, because it is an amazing and very original concept, and it has brought about loads of new and interesting plots and stories. In fact I wish it could have been done to that extent in "TNG", which only sparsely touched it with Hugh Borg and when Picard became Locutus. Both of those episodes made great viewing. At the moment in the UK the 7th season of "DS9" is running, and I've noticed a real change in the style, normally each episode would focus on one main thing, but it would also have several other minor parts which although not big enough for a whole episode, were still very good. But now the episodes only focus on one main thing, which I feel is something lost. Does anyone else share this opinion
