Within every strong fandom, there is fan fiction. Fan fiction, for those who are unfamiliar with the term, is quite simply fictional stories written by fans set in their favorite universe. There is no money to be made here. Fan stories are labors of love to be shared with fellow fans. As fan stories are bound by no rules, the creatively flows uninhibited in creating every kind of story imaginable about every possible character.

The DS9 fan fiction community takes very seriously the responsibility of policing their material, carefully marking everything deemed unsuitable for children. While adult material can often be found on the same site as general audience fiction, the stories are rated--G, PG, PG-13, R, and NC-17 being the most common ratings used. When searching out fan fiction, the readers must use their own judgment as to whether or not adult rated material is appropriate for them. If the adult stuff is not your bag, don't worry, it's easy to avoid, but you must pay attention to the story rating. If this sounds like an over-caution, it is. I don't want anyone walking into a story that contains explicit material that they don't want to read because they ignored the rating and then come back here to yell at me because of it. I also don't want anyone to avoid seeking out fan fiction because they are worried they might be exposed to material which does not interest them. Just watch out for the story's rating--and often an adult-rated story will have further information in the subject line indicated the nature of the adult material, i.e.. extreme violence, sexual situations, etc--and you will be fine. Like I said, adult material is easily avoidable.
