Will DS9 get a movie? That's the question fans have been asking since the show
entered its final season. Now the season finale has come and gone, and the question
remains. No one knows for certain at this point if Deep Space Nine will ever show
up on the big screen. But the answer may well be affected by the answer to a different
question--did DS9 leave room for a movie?
Should a movie come about, one has to wonder where it would fall in the DS9 timeline. By the end of the series' TV run, several of its recurring characters--including its best villains, Winn, Dukat, Weyoun--were all dead, and several other characters were sent away from the station. Not to mention Captain Sisko now resides in the wormhole. Would a movie's storyline have to find ways to bring all the characters back together and introduce new ones to fill in the voids left by those who died? Or would the story have to take place before the finale, when all the characters were alive and in their proper places? There's great appeal to having a movie filled with familiar characters should be set in the existing timeline. However, such a placement could possibly hamper the storyline. Afterall, we already know the Federation goes to war with the Dominion and wins. That covers the main focus of seasons two through seven. There would be no point in doing any kind of Dominion or war-related story since it would hold no surprise or suspense appeal for DS9 fans. And first-time DS9 viewers watching a story that ties-in to the TV storylines would lost compared to those already familiar with the show's history. A stand-alone story, unrelated to anything else in the existing DS9 timeline, would likely would work best for both long-time and new viewers. A DS9 movie--if the creative powers that be can figure out where to place it and how to make it appealing to fans and general movie goers--would be great. A tasty treat for fans that we don't need, but would certainly eat if it were available. The bottom line though, is not whether the fans want or deserve a movie, not whether the writers can dream up a story that works, but whether Paramount will make one. And the only way that's going to happen is if they think the "middle child" of Star Trek will make them enough money. Sure, a DS9 movie would be nice, but I'm not holding my breath. Go To Page: 1
