When the article you're planning doesn't pan out and you've missed your deadline and are
desperately casting about for a topic, it's usually best to go with something you know you
can write about easily. That's why this week's DS9 article is about what I loved
most about the show.
1. The Characters: The DS9 characters were doubly blessed. They had wonderful, talented writers who were dedicated to fleshing them out to their full potential and evolving them slowly over seven seasons. And they had wonderfully talented portrayers who were dedicated to fleshing them out to their full potential and evolving them slowly over seven seasons. Good acting and writing is an unbeatable combination when it comes to creating characters with depth with who fans can put an emotional investment into week after week. 2. The Stories: Whether it be the emotionally charged shows like "Duet" or "The Visitor," the comedies like "Trials and Tribble-ations," or layered plotting shown in "Improbable Cause/The Die is Cast, or the action packed, don't-blink-or-you'll-miss-something episodes such as "Tears of the Prophets," DS9 had something for everyone. The writers had great talent for putting out a mix of different shows, and more importantly, had great talent for making the different kinds of shows work--most of the time. Complex characters and great storytelling--what more could a fan ask for? 3. Bashir: Confession--I'm a Dr. Bashir junkie. Even as the show sailed down the slippery slope of quality, unfortunately taking most of it's complex characters and great storytelling with it, during the last season, I remained steadfastly hooked on the series for one reason-- Dr. Julian Bashir. I loved this character! His was, in my humble opinion, the best developed character on the show. His evolution from the naive, hero-wannabe of season 1 to the war hardened, reluctant spy of season 7, though admittedly shaky in spots, was wonderful and I thoroughly enjoyed watching him grow over the years. 4. Friendships: Garak/Bashir, Bashir/O'Brien, Sisko/Dax, Sisko/Kira, Kira/Odo (pre- romance)--all built great friendships, and all were a joy to watch. Each friendship had its own unique qualities that are too far to number here, though I may write more about DS9's friendships in future articles. However, the one thing they all did have in common was how they grew closer over the years and even, sadly, how some grew apart. My favorite duo, Garak/Bashir, were, much to my disappointment, were one of the friendships that faded over time. But over seven years there wasn't one scene these two had together that I didn't like, whether they were debating the merits of Human and/or Go To Page: 1 2
