Choosing the ten best episodes of Deep Space Nine was not easy. It took longer to settle
on my list than it did to write about it. So, without further adieu, here are my choices for
the greatest episodes of DS9. *Note: Two-parters are counted as one episode.*
"Duet" - The best of the best. This is the episode I would have a non-fan who was curious about DS9 watch. A first season episode, "Duet" set the standard of excellence that the fans came to expect as a rule rather than an exception from DS9. "The Visitor" - It's hard to explain why what was essentially a reset-at-the-end show deserves such high regard. But no other Trek episode, from any of the Trek shows has ever moved me as much as this one. It's interesting to note that obsession, grief, and the lengths to which such feelings drive people was the underlying theme for both "The Visitor," and "Duet." "Improbable Cause"/"The Die Is Cast" - This kind of layered plot within a plot story was something the DS9 writers did exceptionally well. While keeping viewers busy looking in one direction, the story twists were able to slip in unnoticed, thus surprising us with their seemingly sudden appearance. But once given time to think it over, fans were left saying, "You know, that makes perfect sense." I love a story that can do that. "In the Pale Moonlight" - It takes guts to knock the hero of the show - in this case, Captain Sisko - down into the mud. Once there he has no choice but to get his hands dirty. to However, unwittingly, no matter what his intentions may have been, Sisko made his bed and accepted, as did viewers, that he'd have to lay in it. "In Purgatory's Shadow"/"By Inferno's Light" - Another of those layered plots that loves to keep shocking the viewers out of their reveries. And a story that had no qualms about redrawing the map of the DS9 universe to boot. What more could any DS9 fan ask for? "Rocks and Shoals" - It's also fun to watch what happens when the hero gets stuck in a no-win scenario. Sisko had no real choices here, but that didn't make his decisions any easier for him to swallow. "Necessary Evil" - Wow. Again, it's hard to explain exactly what was so great about this episode, except it just left you breathless and wanting more. Every second of the look back at the station during the Cardassian Occupation was riveting. "Crossover" - So what happens when good intentions come back to bite you in the butt? Go To Page: 1 2
