The 19th edition of the Breeders Crown has come and gone...here are some interesting facts about the top races for freshman and sophomore trotters and pacers.
Post position #10 got four checks in the eight Breeders Crown events, but post position #6 led the way with six cashes. In three of the four Trotting Crowns, Post 8 emerged victorious. Cameron Hall, the only repeat winner from 2001, joined some fancy company--putting her name among those such as Syrinx Hanover, Peace Corps, Lookout Victory and Jefs Spice. The most represented trotting and pacing sires on the entire Breeders Crown program for 2 & 3-year- olds? Malabar Man-six, and a tie between Artsplace and Western Hanover with eight each. All three won at least one Crown final. There were 13 breakers on the evening among the trotters, including all four last place finishers. For the sixth STRAIGHT year, Western Hanover has sired a Breeders Crown winner (Totally Western). Ben Wallace, Linda Toscano and Mario Baillargeon all broke into the Crown winners circle in 2002. Jack Moiseyev won two Breeders Crowns at the Meadowlands for older horses-but did NOT appear on the Crown program for the youngsters this fall. Cam Swifty was the Juvenile winner a year back, but could only manage an eighth-place finish this year. The top six money-winning three-year-olds in all of North America were ALL in action on Breeders Crown night: Mach Three-4th-From $1,175,547 to $1,215,547 McArdle-2nd-From $1,116,026 to $1,241,026 Like A Prayer-2nd-from $952,879 to $1,088,504 Art Major-1st-From $889,289 to $1,139,289 Kadabra-1st-From $811,968 to $1,083,218 Red River Hanover-5th-From $791,445 to $816,445 The biggest margin on the evening--5 1/4 lengths by Totally Western. The shortest margin on the evening--a neck--by Armbro Amoretto. Highest priced horse on the card--$134.30-1 Hammerinkoz, who finished seventh in the three-year-old Colt Trot. Shortest priced horse on the card--40 cents-Worldly Beauty who was second in the three-year-old Filly Pace. When All American Native finished second in the Freshman Colt Pace, he kept a dubious streak alive. NO Woodrow Wilson winner has EVER parlayed that into a Freshman Breeders Crown score. Camtastic-1987-remains the LAST FAVORITE to win the two-year-old Colt Pace. Broadway Hall is from the first crop of Conway Hall and is certain to be named the outstanding freshman trotter of this year--you have to go back just four years for the last time that a freshman colt trotter was sired by a winner of the award as a freshman also-1998-C R Commando was a son of 1989 freshman Trotting Colt of the year-Royal Troubador. |
