High Priced Yearlings of 2001

There were 84 yearlings that sold for over $100,000 in 2001, 48 on the pacing side and 36 on the trotting end of the sport. Western Hanover led the way with 17 $100,000 yearlings, followed by Artsplace (both pacers). Muscles Yankee and Pine Chip led all trotting sires with eight (8) each. As well, Muscles Yankee and Conway Hall (with 2) were the only two first crop sires represented.

The two highest priced yearlings were $450,000 Stewart Hall and $425,000 Chelsea Hall--both by Garland Lobell. Of the 82 other yearlings that sold for $100,000 and up, only two others were sired by Garland Lobell. In all, 14 of the top 21-priced yearlings of 2001 were trotters.

If you study the top priced yearlings sold in terms of their sales companies, Kentucky Standardbred Sales and the Standardbred Horse Sales had the highest number with 31 each, followed by the Tattersalls with 19. Walkers yearling Sale, Forest City Yearling Sale and Standardbred Canada had one yearling each bring over $100,000.

In all 13 of the 84 $100,000+ yearlings sold for $200,000 or higher, and four of these were sired by Magical Mike (pacer). Balanced Image, at 24-years-old, and No Nukes, at 22, were the oldest sires at the time to have $100,000 yearlings.

No Nukes (now 23 in 2002)with his 17th crop of yearlings last year, had Seven Stories as his highest seller at $145,000.

Trainer Bob McIntosh was the most represented buyer among the top 24 priced yearlings with 4 buys.

Gracious Yankee-at $200,000-was the highest ticket for trotting sire Muscles Yankee.
