Top Sires of 2001As 2001 comes to a close, let's reflect on some of harness racing's top sires from this season. Now 27-years-old, BIG TOWNER is the sire of a record six female Breeders Crown performers. Winning 31 of 48 starts in the late 1970's, Big Towner competed against the likes of Rambling Wilie, Nat Lobell and Kerry Gold, and has sired millionaires Broadway Express, Town Pro, Sandman Hanover and Sweet Relfection. GARLAND LOBELL,(sire of Goldsmith Maid winner Cameron Hall)was second last year in money earnings behind Balanced Image in all of North America in money won by his offspring. He has BOTH divisional winners this year among the freshman crop with his Andover Hall dominating in the male ranks. S Js PHOTO, the sire of S Js Caviar, has passed along some of his grit and determination to his sons and daughters. He took his lifetime mark of 1:53 in 1995 at age 5, inbetween visits to Europe, both of which were successful. David Wade, his driver and trainer, "Everyone told me to give him time when he came back from Europe the first time, and that he probably would not be the same horse. But Photo was always tough, and he didn't lose anything. When we brought him back late in 1995, he won over there again. You don't see many horses take their mark here and go overseas twice in the same year and win there both times." ARTSPLACE, the 4-time defending leading sire in North America, is likely to be runnerup to WESTERN HANOVER this year. In the history of harness racing, no horse has ever led 5 years in a row, and these are the first five crops of three-year-olds that he has had. ABERCROMBIE, sire of ARTSPLACE was the last horse to accomplish this feat, but not in successive seasons (1987, 1988, 1990, 1996). BALANCED IMAGE is having yet another solid season, and comes off a 2000 campagin that saw him post a better than $3 million advantage over GARLAND LOBELL as the number one trotting sire in North America. Most amazing of all with Balanced Image might be the fact that he only had a 1:58.4 lifetime mark, and his career bankroll was $174,651.27! Glen Garnsey, his trainer-driver, might have been looking into his crystal ball in 1983 when he pronounced that Balanced Image might indeed be better than his record indicated. CAMS CARD SHARK has had a tremendous season. Names like Brioso Hanover, Riverboat King, Gamblers Dream, Bettors Delight, Million Dollar Cam, Aces N Sevens, Gehrig, Banker Jack and Sharky Spur have all done their part to make dad proud.
