Trainer Has A Way With Fillies

Trainer Robin Schadt has certainly had her hands full this summer. The Crete, Illinois-based harness racing conditioner of the Odds On Racing team has two of the best four-year-old fillies currently competing on the local scene.

Both fillies compete at the top level on their respective gaits. Dustin N Cleanin is a trotter, while Odds On Charmaine is a pacer, and both have set track records while racing during the current meeting at Hawthorne Racetrack in Stickney, Illinois.

"Both of these fillies give one hundred and ten percent each and every time they step out onto the racetrack,'" Schadt said. "They both love to race."

Dustin N Cleanin is a daughter of Donerail who has won three straight races at Hawthorne, including a start on August 19 with driver Tim Tetrick in the sulky. She was clocked in her own track record time of 1:57, easily besting her five trotting rivals by over two lengths.

"She just keeps getting stronger and stronger," Schadt said. "It's nice when you can race in the same class after already winning two-in-a-row."

Dustin N Cleanin now has five wins, six seconds and two thirds this season from 16, with $31,535 in earnings to her credit. To date she has amassed $61,178 in career earnings, and most recently (August 27) finished second, coming from dead last to be clocked in 1:56.2, beaten only one length.

"This horse is a real lover, and great to work around," Schadt said. "Dustin is the type of filly that really had to get her confidence level up, and had to learn how to win. Now, it seems she really wants to win every time, which is great."

Odds On Charmaine is Odds On Racing's top pacing filly. Schadt purchased the daughter of Western Hanover for $50,000 at the fall 2001 Tattersalls Sale in Lexington, Kentucky. The filly has responded by earning $223,867 for Odds On Racing, which is owned in partnership by Schadt and Florida-based businessman Dana Parham.

Odds On Charmaine scored a winning mile of 1:51.2 at Hawthorne on August 6, good enough to lower the track standard and earn her the title of track record holder for her age, sex and gait.

This year she's garnered earnings just shy of $92,077 for Schadt and her team, winning her latest start on August 27 at The Red Mile in Lexington, Kentucky, pacing in 1:52.2 for driver David Miller, en route to winning the Filly & Mare Preferred Handicap Pace.
