Will This Pay Off? -- Approaching the Comedy Businessfact that you - and no one else, you alone - gave yourself that opportunity is a tremendous gift. I'm not trying to ask you to forfeit your dreams, or paint some dreary picture of the comedy business as a world of broken hearts and failed attempts. Quite the opposite, actually. I enjoy performing, and writing, and talking about, and writing columns about, stand-up comedy because it is probably the only thing in my life that I have ever been completely at peace with. Because I have learned to enjoy it, without regrets. I still dream about being on TV, having magazine profiles done about me, and all the rest. But, in the meantime, I've come farther than I ever truly expected to. I try and enjoy every laugh, every applause break, every check, and even every hotel room. You can't plan in this business - there are too many factors over which you have no control. Understand the business, be honest, work hard, and do the best that you can. Just don't forget to stop every once in a while and listen to the laughter.
