Stalked, part three

Over the next two months we spent almost every evening together and he would come by for coffee of a morning before we left for work. During this time my two children got to know him and thought, like I, that he was a really nice guy with high moral standards. He had also taken me over several times to his mother’s house and I had met many members of his family. They too were very down to earth even though they were well known and prominent in the community. I had absolutely no reason to doubt the person I was dating after meeting his family. In turn I had introduced him to many of my co-workers and they too were impressed with Steve.

In the early part of October he told me that just before we met he had ended a three-month relationship with a woman who wouldn’t let go. He said if we ever ran into her in public to keep that in mind. Again, I still felt I had no reason to question or doubt him. Two years later I found out the opposite. His former girlfriend had to have the police remove him from her home and he had stalked her. On top of that when we first started dating we drove by her home several times. His story – it was his house that he had just sold. Little did I ever realize back then that he was still stalking her and that I was present. Pretty chilling when I think back to that time.

In mid-October I found a new home and we agreed to live together. I was now in love with this man and the kids liked him as well. Shortly after moving into my new home I started seeing some slight changes in Steve. In my line of work I was often required to attend dinner meetings with high-ranking government officials. Often times he seemed angry or jealous when I had to attend the meetings. One particular evening he paged me at least 10 times. It was a point in the meeting where I couldn’t just get up and return the call. The owner of the restaurant came over several times to inform me that Steve was calling every five minutes and wanted me interrupted. I told him that if Steve called I would return his call as soon as possible but I couldn’t come to the phone. After that Steve must have called back because my pager was going off every two minutes. When I was able to break away from the meeting I returned his pages. He was outraged that I hadn’t called him back earlier. I told him that we would discuss it when I got home. Needless to say that didn’t make him a very happy camper. He then accused me of not being at a business meeting and had it in his mind that I was seeing someone else. Since I had never dealt with this type of situation in any relationship I was dumbfounded and couldn’t believe that I was being accused of sleeping around.
