Stress and Stalking

Stress - it is a natural part of being alive. We all have stress, but there is a difference between good and bad stress. Good stress helps you concentrate and can help you give a better speech or do a better job. Bad stress is the kind of stress most stalking victims feel. Chronic bad stress can lead to high blood pressure, heart attacks, and even death! While you may be powerless to control your stalker, you can control the stress you are feeling. Relaxation techniques, exercise, rest and proper nutrition can help you control your stress.

I have found that exercise is one of the best stress relievers you can do. I work out at least 5 days a week, preferably more. But you do not have to pull two-hour stints in the local gym to de-stress. Find a place where you feel safe and go for a walk. Many local gyms now have indoor tracks where you may feel safer than being outside. While you walk, focus on pleasant thoughts. You might try lifting weights as well. Being stronger might make you feel more in control of your life. Weights will not cause women to bulk up! Believe me, I've been working out with weights for the past three years, and I haven't become a female Arnold! I've just become slightly more defined, and much stronger!

Another stress reliever for me is music. I turn up the music loud and dance around the house. I sing along to the music and try to forget my problems for a while. That isn't always possible, but it does help! I also enjoy lying down on the couch and closing my eyes for a quick 10-minute catnap.

It is important in times of high stress to have good nutrition. You might want to consult with a dietitian to get a proper diet for you if you have any underlying health conditions. If not, you can go by the American Dietetic Organization's guidelines.

My favorite way to relax is through prayer and meditation on the Bible. This might not be for you right now, but I think it is an important facet of staying well.

Take care of your body during this time. Don't let yourself get too ill to function. Nurture yourself and enjoy any moments that you can. Try to focus on what is good in your life right now. There are many other stress relievers out there - but don't become dependant on alcohol and drugs - they will only hurt you, not help you.
