Follow Your Passions: Part Two

On my Suite 101 topic site Follow Your Passion, I have compiled a number of excellent links that lead to websites that inspire and motivate. www.oprah.com is one of them. I am not promoting Oprah Winfrey by any means (not that she needs it) but she happens to be a strong advocate of people following their passions. Her television show reflects this as does her magazine and website. There are plenty of resources on her site including active message boards where you will find people struggling with the same things you are. There are regular chats with Oprah's guests and loads of inspiration.

Last but not least, you are your best resource. It all begins with you. Nothing gets off the ground without you and your intentions and your persistence.

KT: How can someone identify his/her passion?

KH: Think about what got you excited as a child. Pets, stamps, comic books, drawing, model airplanes. These are clues. Don't be discouraged if you can't think of anything. Sometimes we come across our passions later in life. One mistake people make is in thinking that when we speak of a passion we mean an art form like painting or dancing. Your passion could be nurturing and raising your children. It could be gardening, cleaning, cooking, knitting, or organizing. I have a friend who loves to look for things. Yep, she loves to search for things so much it's kind of a letdown when she finds them! Also your passion may not be something you'll ever get paid for or earn a living from. In fact, that's another clue, what do you love doing so much, you'd do it for free?

KT: What is the first thing he/she should do?

KH: You need to know what you want and you need the desire to do it. If you don't have these two things you have nothing to commit yourself to. If you have a big goal - break it down. One thing that turns many people off of pursuing their dreams is the size of the goal. It seems so big and complicated they are certain they can never achieve it, so why start? Break your big goal into small steps. When you've completed one step, advance to the next. For example, if your dream is to obtain a university degree but
