Cyberstalking: Choose Your Future

Choosing your future. Those three words are understated. Too many people do not believe they hold the key to their future. Each of us can make choices - choices that will determine our future. We can choose to be afraid, or we can choose to put our stalkers behind bars.

Right now, legislation is pending in several states regarding cyberstalking laws. I've urged you to be proactive before - now is the time to be even more so. Check out your state's laws and if you aren't satisfied - do something about it. Call or write your senators and representatives. Don't rest until it's done.

Cyberstalking is scary - and it can be just as scary as offline stalking. But, unlike offline victims, there is nowhere to turn as few states have appropriate laws to help online victims. It is so easy to get your address and information online. These predators find out where you live, where you work. They begin to take over your life. You feel out of control. You are afraid to answer the phone, the door, or open your email accounts.

How can you stay safe online? Always select a gender-neutral username for your email address or for chat rooms. Keep your PRIMARY email address private - give it out to only family members and friends. Don't fill out profiles when you sign up for your email account. Just fill out as little information about yourself as possible. You do not need to fill out everything they ask for. When you hit the submit button, it will tell you what information is absolutely necessary. Don't defend yourself if someone starts bothering you online - that is what they want - just like with obscene phone calls. Don't say anything online that you wouldn't say to a person's face! If someone begins calling you, get an unlisted number. NEVER give your password to anyone. Monitor your child's internet use. IF you post photos of yourself online be very cautious. Some stalkers become obsessed because of an image.

These tips will help keep you safe, but they do not prevent you from becoming a victim of cyberstalking. Unfortunately the state where I live is one of the states where there is NO protection whatsoever for victims. I've contacted my senators. I believe that eventually, a bill will be introduced and passed here.

A federal Cyberstalking bill keeps floating around but is now on hold due to the fact that Senator Spencer Abraham, who introduced the bill, is no longer a senator, he is the Secretary of Energy. Please contact your senators and representatives about this bill to make sure it remains active, or to get a related bill introduced.
