Be Proactive

I got an email from a lady who was being stalked. She expressed to me that her local law enforcement didn’t take her seriously. I get so angry when I realized that this still goes on. But, the one thing I told her was that it didn’t matter if they didn’t take her seriously – she still had to go to them and to keep taking to them proof of the stalking! We have to take control of our own lives, and unfortunately standing up to people in authority is something we must do.

I hope she took my advice – I hate that she had such a hard time. I hate that so many of us are prisoners in our homes while our stalker is walking around scot-free with no one to stop him or her! But, thank goodness that in many states, laws have been passed to protect us. But these laws haven’t just happened. They have had people behind them, pushing them on through! And that is where we come in – we have to be proactive here!

Something each of us should do is check out our state laws regarding stalking. You can check yours out here at the National Center for Victims of Crime: http://www.nvc.org/law/statestk.htm

If you find that your state laws are lacking – call your senators, both at the state and national levels. Call your representative as well. If you can, visit your representatives so they can put a face to a victim. It will make it more real for them. Get your friends and family members involved. It is so important that we take an active role in this. It gives us back a sense of control over our lives! Plus, we are helping other people avoid this crime.

If you feel like law enforcement officials aren’t paying attention, don’t stop going to the police. Ask to speak to a supervisor. Stay in their faces! Keep bringing your proof. One day they will pay attention. It is better than not seeking help at all. Please stay safe and take care of yourselves. Each one of you is a very special individual. You DESERVE the best!
