The OssomBlossom box is a mold for a cast garden planter. Similar to the popular stepping stones, the blossom box can have art glass designs applied to the sides of the planter before pouring. Currently there are two shapes, a rectangle (looks like a trough or a window box shape) and a square. I made one using my own design - my first molded stained glass item. The design is a traditional fan shaped motif. I used two types of blue and green opalescent glass and green DiamondCrete. One of the glasses has a granite texture which I turned to the wrong side on two pieces and turned to the front for the center section. The motif is only on one side, but I could have applied it to all four sides. DiamondCrete is a cement product used to make stepping stones and other similar items. Projects made with it will have a very fine texture and a smooth finish. There are other products that can be used for this type of glass project, but I haven't had the opportunity to try them yet. Burt Conlisk of Studio B Stained Glass in Elkhart, Indiana developed the mold to make the OssomBlossom box. Through persistence and a willingness to learn, his idea became a reality. I wanted to talk about at Suite101 because it is such a great example that you don't have to work for a big company in order to create something new for the glass industry. Burt is an entrepreneur who runs his own studio. He started with an idea, then had to learn about the process of moldmaking, learn what different mold materials will do and work with a manufacturer to see the project through. Even thought it took three years, his determination paid off. Mosaic applications using stained glass are becoming quite popular and gardening is also, so Burt's idea is very timely. I wish him great success. If you get Stained Glass News at your local retailer, the new issue (#53) has a new product announcement describing the product too.
