Boris Said’s Suspension

Did the suspension meant to punish the Trans-Am Series driver, Boris Said, actually punish the fans and race series as well?

It seems that it did just this. When looking back to the first race Said was to sit out, it seemed as if the suspension meant to punish the driver for his inappropriate remarks, was actually punishing the fans as well. Without Said behind the wheel at Mosport International Raceway in Ontario, Canada, the fans were subjected to a small field of only sixteen cars. Certainly not the number of cars that promotes exciting races full of top-notch drivers.

By the time Lime Rock came along, things had shown a slight improvement. The Connecticut race contained seventeen cars, one better than the previous race, which certainly improves the quality of racing. I remember during the race, I honestly thought my suspicions about Said's suspension and its implications on both the fans and the series itself had been wrong. It wasn't until after the race at Lime Rock, when I took a look at the point standings that I realized just how bad a situation like this could become.

Taking this latest example that has come to the spotlight, we can clearly see that Boris Said has completely dropped out of contention for the championship, after just a two-race suspension. Will he even return to the Trans-Am Series for the remainer of the season if he doesn't have a chance to win the championship? Some people seem to think he won't. I personally am unsure one way or the other. Either way, without the Trans-Am Series title at stake, will he still push himself as hard for the win as we have come to expect? Only time can truly tell.

Still, even after thinking about the situation for quite some time, I am left with the question of suspensions and whether or not they truly are the best answer for a series already lacking in cars. Wouldn't perhaps a monetary fine, loss of championship points or some other solution be a more appropriate answer? I suppose it all depends on the crime, so to speak. Of course every solution would have its good points along with the bad, however it may benefit a series to look at some alternative options while re-evaluating the ones currently in place when deciding future punishments. Perhaps the idea should be to find a punishment more suited to a smaller series, because let's face it, the Trans-Am Series is dramatically smaller today then it has been in the past.
