Wisdom of the SpiritI haven't read it yet, but I know it will change my life. I hadn't even heard of it until this week, but Mitch Albom has a TV movie airing in a few days based on his book The Five People You Meet in Heaven. As more of a reader than a television watcher, I am immediately putting that book on my Wish List at Amazon. Why? Because I've read another of his books, Tuesdays With Morrie and found it to be one of the best and most touching books I've read to date. There's something about Albom's books that feeds the soul. Tuesdays With Morrie is the true story of Albom's weekly visits with his dying professor, and the wisdom he gleans about life and death. The Five People You Meet in Heaven is about how we are all connected, and everyone matters, even if you don't know it. It sounds like an updated version of It's a Wonderful Life, which is still running endlessly every Christmas season. These stories are very popular, and for good reason: they speak to the spirit within us. They give us hope and strength, they open our hearts, they let us know we are not alone and that we are important in this life. Albom, in an interview with TV Guide, reported that he is stunned by the number of strangers who pull out pictures and say, "This is my Morrie," or tell him of experiences that are eerily like the ones in his books. "How did you know?" they ask him. He didn't know, he just wrote about his own experiences, and found that we all share them. There are certain things that speak directly to our soul and that move us and change our outlook on life. Whether it's a piece of music, a movie, a line of poetry or a painting, sometimes things have a special message just for us that is felt and understood rather than heard or expressed. And books like Mitch Albom's have stirred the spirits of many. I believe that this soul stirring is our spirit recognizing some universal truth, even if our brains cannot comprehend what it is. But it affects us deeply. It makes us more compassionate, more caring, more willing to help others. It gives us a sense of connection to each other and to the earth. It makes us feel like we never want to lose this feeling, and that life has suddenly stood still and come into perfect balance. In these moments, we grow.
