The story picks as the lesson continues for me.

"During the walk I recalled a memory from my childhood which I had not thought of in many years. My imaginary dog would walk with me. As I walked the two mile stretch I felt this animal spirit with me."

It was real! The animal totem walked with me on that snowy, cold afternoon. This walk occurred after a heated discussion with my girlfriend. He offered companionship because I was alone and far from home.

The final visit occurred on March 5, 1997, "My eyes focused on the curtain where the face of a wolf, coyote or dog appeared. I knew it was real because it was staring straight at me....very dominate on the curtain."

At the time I did not realize what type of canine that it was. But when I returned home that changed. My animal spirit revealed him to me when I arrived home. While sitting on the beach I closed my eyes for some rest and relaxation when the coyote appeared to me in a dream. He stood at the end of a paved road as the heat rose from the pavement creating a blurry effect. He stood in the distance.

In Indian lore the Coyote is referred to as the Trickster. Its spiritual qualities that it freely gifted to me were to be able to find balance in my life. Live with the duality in my life like simplicity and complications, work and play are just to name a few. Prior I mentioned that I always referred to myself as a chameleon but when I look back over my life I see the Coyote. The trickster was the one that lay within.

After meeting my animal totem it has helped me to appreciate, even more so the creatures that cross my path. In their own way they have some knowledge to present to you. No matter what type of animal it is they are presenting you with a unique gift. In "Animal Speaks" by Ted Andrews, he states it simply "Nature totems -especially animals are symbols of specific kinds of energy we are manifesting and aligning with your life. The animal becomes a symbol of a specific force of the invisible spiritual realm manifesting with our own life." Since that incident I do not look at wildlife the same way anymore. Whenever one appears it encourages me to examine the situations in my life.
