May is "Better Speech and Hearing Month"! This is not something I expect you to remember (no I will not quiz you about it later) but I am letting the word out that many a speech/language pathologist or audiologist are ready and willing to answer questions, offer information or referral or just listen if needed.
Many professionals are not afraid to give presentations to civic organizations or create public service announcements to help the public understand communication problems or how to go about seeking help. Many professionals volunteer services, such as Operation Smile, which travel abroad to assist a team of medical staff evaluate and give treatment to people with cleft palates before and after surgery. Others function as part of an organization, like a hospital or school, that provides outreach and provide screenings (many are free of charge) open to the public throughout the year, not just during May. It is also not uncommon for a speech/language therapist or audiologist to work with different civic organizations to help families with such functions as obtaining scholarships for summer camps for children with special needs or equipment like hearing aids to help a child or senior citizen get along better at home, at school or in the community. We are more than happy to work with patients on prevention of disorders, such as vocal hygiene or hearing loss. We are not just here to test and treat the problem. We care about the families we come into contact with and genuinely care that they get the help they deserve and need. Never be afraid to ask us questions. We know where to find the answer if we don't already know it. Use the help of speech/language pathologists and audiologists. Ask the questions you want answered. Use us to help find the information you need to know. Let us help you help your family. We are just a phone call away! Go To Page: 1
