Living with Learning Disabilites - part 2

I also did a lot of research on my disablities. When I had papers due, I looked up things that interested me. I found out I LOVE gathering information! I graduated in 1995 - and before that the Internet was not as vast as it is today. I would go to the library - my favorite thing to do was copy stuff off of microfiche because you didn't have to go to a different part of the library to get the information.

I found out a lot about my disabilites. I found out some of what is happeneing, and SOME of why. Maybe I'll write about that later. I kept a lot of the stuff I printed out. GRIEF! I paid for it! I wasn't going to toss it! I might need that one day. Sound familiar?

I also quit fighting some of it. I found out that a word processor was a great help. That way I could go back to a place when I thought of something and type it in when I thought of it. I learned how to just go with thoughts that bounced around all over the place. Some of my best ideas would come when I was working on a totally different section, or after I re-read it. I could also correct or find better words to use once the idea was out in front of me. I learned to work WITH what I was given, instead of curse it.

It did take 6 years. There were times that the stress of me being out of a real job began to show. My husband had seen me fail through the last 3 times in college - and he got discouraged becasue it was taking so long. That made it all the more tough sometimes. He didn't think I would finish until I was doing my student teaching - and didn't REALLY celebrate until I got a job! It's important to have a spouse's support, but it can be done without it. Most the time, I just had to believe in myself.

Believe in myself.

I did get my degree in elem ed. with generic special education as my specialty. With that I can teach any level of special ed. that I want. Right now I am about to begin my 5th year teaching special ed. classes in a middle school in San Antonio. The main things I have to work on
