has a Ph.D. in special education. She earned that long after I had left home, but it started that day when she decided that she could do what she was doing with me. But I digress.

I don't remember when I knew I was dyslexic. I just remember I never liked to read. The words moved - they had multiple meanings and if I got the wrong meaning - the whole thing would not make sense. My eyes skipped over words. When it skipped over that all important "NOT", it REALLY didn't make sense! Back in the 60's text books were not written with kids in mind after about 1st grade. They were dry, boring, hard for me to understand and published in very small print. No, glasses were not the answer. Couple that with my inability to sit still and even LESS ability to pay attention, and you've got a kid who missed a lot in school.

I was a major nerd with few friends all through school. Most the time - I didn't understand what the problem was. Why didn't people like me, and why did they make fun of me all the time were questions I asked myself a lot. Most ADD/LD kids and adults really don't have a clue. For most of them - this a very VERY hard thing to face up to.

I didn't really learn about how to deal with all of this until I was in my early 30's. That was about 10 years ago. I made it through high school because we lived in a small town where they were more concerned about the football stats than they were about education. I miserably flunked out of my first 2 attempts at college, and got to where all I wanted to do was work. Most the jobs I had there was no homework involved. My house was a mess - I couldn't keep anything on a schedule - and I watched a WHOLE lot of TV!

Well - that's enough for now. My next article will deal with more of the present, and some discussion on what ADHD people typically do. - and I'll have it done by the end of the month.

This is the first site I did. I took the pics off because they were too big, and now I'm still trying to get something up. Hoepfully soon. The links still work, there just aren't any pics. There are a few pages of my history here.
