Why does special education even exist? Why do my tax dollars pay for kids that can't learn - can't do what other kids do - will never amount to much - why do I have to pay for this? This money could be better spent on kids that can contribute to society. Kids that are of NORMAL intelligence - that can do things in the world to help other people. Kids that can AMOUNT to something. WHY does my money - and so MUCH of my money - go to educate these kids????
Oh - I'm sorry - I should have put quotes on that first paragraph. I am a special education teacher. I don't feel that way. I have special ed. children - stands to reason that I do not feel that way. If it had been around.....I would have been in special education....there's no way I can feel that way. Public law 94-142 says that all children are entitled to a free and appropriate education. The latest addition to special education laws recently has been IDEA. Part of what this law is designed to do is to see that children with disabilites - seen or un-seen - are given the education they deserve. They need to be given an education to try to make it on their own in society. The theory is a few dollars spent now, will help these kids not only not be a burden on society - but be contributing members. That usually translates into make the tax payers. Many people balk at the amount of money spent on special ed. They say "if we didn't have to support the retards we'd have enough money to do what we need to do for kids that are worth saving". Try telling that to a parent of a child who has Down's syndrome. They didn't ask for their child to be Down's - the child was just born that way. Try telling that to the FACE of a parnets who has a child with Oppositional Defiant syndrome... a child who argues - DISAGREES with everything you say - NO MATTER WHAT you say. This parent has done everything they know how to do....and let me tell you they are TIRED! Nothing works... not even the meds. Tell that to the parent whose kid just can't read - NO MATTER WHAT THEY DO - they work with him, they try and try - and for some reason - they kid just can't do it. They didn't ask for their kid to be this way.....they'd probobly give their eye teeth for a normal kid - with normal problems. Just let them grow up - go to college - get a job - and come back every once in a while to visit and bring the grandkids. Go To Page: 1 2
