Isn't My child special too?

Jun 13, 2001 - © Mary Pantazis

At school when this first happened my little boy was told that Mikie did this stuff because he was special. What a mixed message to give to my son. My son has been told he is special ALL OF HIS LIFE. But he has also been told he cannot hurt others. How is this helping my child? If my child hits a child on the playground he is punished.

Well, EXCUSE ME! MY SON HAS A RIGHT TO AN EDUCATION TOO! My son has a right to go to school and not be abused by a child with special needs. My son may not be coded, but he also is special isn't he? Now if I had sent my five year old to school with a bloody lip and a bruised leg the authorities would have been knocking at my door, yet the school can send my son home like this and because it was done by a five year old special needs boy I am supposed to accept this? I do not think so. I do not accept this.

If you ask about the regular child, you will be told how good it is for them to be in classes with special needs children. I AM SO SICK OF THIS STATEMENT!

Yes, I agree, I want my child to be with students who are blind who are learning with different tools. Yes, I want my child to be with deaf children and learn sign language. Yes, I want my child to help the child with muscular dystrophy and cerebral palsy. I want my child to help the truly disabled students. BUT I DO NOT WANT MY CHILD TO BE VICTIMIZED. I also feel that services in schools should be available to ALL students not just the "special" ones.

However, Mainstreaming has gotten out of hand.

I remember a student I once had to mainstream. The boy was 15, had autism and he did nothing but SCREAM at the top of his lungs at ALL times. He was a boy doing facilitated communication and the only person he would facilitate with was his mother. He would come to school in the morning, he had his own aide, and the aide would spend the day doing a series of tasks to keep the boy from screaming. His goal was to come to school and learn not to scream at the time. Wonderful. ANYONE EVER CONSIDER THE REGULAR
