For Special Education Teachers....

When I was in college to become an educator I had a professor assign a book to me. It was called One Child and it was written by Torey Hayden.

I remember going to the bookstore and picking up the book, reading the back cover and thinking "I can't read this, it is too sad".

I did read it. I read it that night, and when I finished it I read it again. I was totally engrossed in the story. I was totally engrossed in the author! I went to the bookstore searching for more Torey Hayden books. I was thrilled when I found them. This woman and her writing about her teaching is what made me want to be a special education teacher.

Torey Hayden does not "Teach by the rules" some of her methods would not have been allowed in the school where I taught. That is unfortunate because I believe her sometimes unorthodox ways should be models for special education programs!
