First off, I have to say that I'm sorry for the delay in writing this article. At the end of May, we decided to take a two-week trip to Mexico to visit my husband's family. We ordered the plane tickets on a Friday and left the next weekend, so I had one week to prepare for the trip (plus fit in doctor appointments, a tune-up for our van, and about a million other things). After a hectic week, it was so relaxing to be in the van, on our way to the airport! This trip was significant in that it was the first time my in-laws would see my 19 month old son. Also, my parents and my sister went with us. It was their first trip to Mexico (other than a few mission trips to a border town). It had been four years since my husband and myself had made the trip. I will give more in-depth articles about some of the things I learned and experienced on the trip in the upcoming months, but I will share with you some interesting tidbits in the meantime. First, I must urge you that if you are looking for plane tickets, don't discard your local travel agent for Internet services just yet. I had looked up prices on several on-line services, but when I checked with a travel agent, she found a special rate for me that was HALF of the best fares available on-line! Be sure to shop around before you buy...you never know where your best deal will come from. I have to say Mexico has changed a lot since our last visit four years ago. First, cellular phones are literally everywhere! My dad says we should do a commercial with the farmer with his team of donkeys plowing the field carrying his cell phone. I was quite impressed with the changes in the goverment that we experienced (Presidente Fox must be doing a good job!) First, Mexico's Immigration and Customs were much friendlier this time (maybe it was because we looked more like a bunch of gringo tourists). It only took maybe 10 minutes to get out of the airport compared to the normal hour that we spent in our last trips. Also, we spent a lot of time driving around to see various sights. On earlier trips, we would be stopped countless times by Federal and local police to "check on things". We would always have to leave a mordida (small bribe) before we could leave. This time we were only stopped once by a Federal police agent who was extremely polite for a routine check. We didn't have to give him a single peso! Go To Page: 1 2
