She did it! The popular Latin talk show host, Cristina Saralegui, decided to write her autobiography. So what? Big deal? This book is not just your everyday, run-of-the-mill biography. Instead, it is a close look at the personal life of one of the most well-known Latin professionals in the country. I'm not the kind of person who enjoys reading biographies. I saw the book at the store and since my mom was treating, I decided to try it out. After all, I do like to watch Cristina's talk show (currently showing on Univision "http://www.univision.net"). Unfortunately, due to time constraints, the book sat on my shelf and gathered dust for several months before I decided to swallow my aversion to non-fiction books and read it. Once I opened the book, I couldn't put it down! The book is written in Cristina's unique style. As I read the words on the page, I could hear her distinct Cuban accent in my head. I almost felt like Cristina herself was writing me a letter. She starts out by explaining about her life in Cuba, and later the exile of her family. It was very emotional because I don't guess I ever realized that the people that are in exile from Cuba really didn't want to leave their homeland, but found themselves with no other alternative. The book goes on to describe Cristina's professional career from the beginning. Cristina: Confessions of a blonde (the English title of the book) describes in detail the hardships Cristina has faced. Her explanation of how she had to adapt to this foreign culture is a definite eye-opener. Also, the trials she faced as a career mom is something that many women face. Cristina also faced problems because of a marriage that ended in divorce and a second marriage to a man who is several years younger than her. This book presents the real Cristina Saralegui, not just the successful "Oprah with Salsa." After reading this book, I watch the talk show in a new light. Often, Cristina makes personal comments throughout the show. Now, I can understand what has caused her to adopt her personal viewpoints. Also, I pay more attention to the organization of the show. Cristina describes some of the lessons she learned about how to manage the show in the early days, and I can see the fruits of her efforts. Even if you don't particularly care for biographies, I highly suggest this book. It gives a lot of insight on many problems that we all face. Cristina! Confidencias de una rubia is full of emotion, short anecdotes of other popular latin stars, and lots of insight into the true personality of Cristina Saralegui.
