Snowshoeing Northern Arizonawarmth. The North Rim: While Highway 67 between Jacob's Lake and the Canyon is closed for the winter, people can still explore the "West" Rim along the 40-mile forest-service-maintained snowmobile trail. No permit is needed, and snowshoers can still get out there to tramp along in utter solitude and scenic splendor, according to Fredonia Forest Service employee Evan Cram. "The highway closes around November 15, and the park services close October 15th, so you're pretty much on your own out there," Cram observed. He recommended people should call the Fredonia Station or check with the Jacob Lake Inn (open all year) for weather and snow conditions. The signed snowmobile trail starts at Jacob Lake, he added. Cram cautioned against being caught out in this remote area during winter storms; bring cold-weather gear, plenty of food and water - and check the weather before you go!
