A few weeks back, I ran a poll to see what my legions of fans wanted to see at this site. I can assume that I have legions of fans because the software that tabulates hits is not working, and I hope it doesn't get fixed. It might destroy my illusions.
Anyway, the poll showed very clearly that you would like to see a variety of topics, and I'm glad it did. We've covered a couple of events taking place in the region, and this week, we'll be looking at a new travel book. I'll be adding reviews of other books and events later, and have started visiting Bed and Breakfasts for inclusion soon. I ran across a travel book recently that fits the description of what I'm doing with this website. If you like this area, you'll be interested in the book. Alabama This Weekend: A Seasonal Guide to Weekend Fun, is a good resource for finding all sorts of places to visit in Alabama. The author, Lynn Grisard Fullman, is a well-known travel writer who considers Alabama her home, and her love of the state is obvious in this book. Some travel books read more like novels, and they are great for picking up on the feel of a place. You might want to read one of them if you're planning an extended stay in a region. If you're interested in short trips in Alabama-like weekend jaunts, for example-this book is the one you need. The author has divided the destinations by the season she thinks is the best time to visit, but as she points out in the introduction, "most of the excursions can be enjoyed anytime." Flipping through the book, you see short descriptions of Fullman's suggested locations, ranging from the well-known tourist areas like Gulf Shores and the Space and Rocket Center, to the lesser-known Alabama Princess Riverboat and Noccalula Falls in Gadsden. She has also included places to stay and places to eat. The book is liberally peppered with black and white photographs taken by the author's husband, and is full of anecdotes, background information, and telephone numbers for more information. Fullman's writing style is clear and readable, a little folksy, but in the laid-back style that many Alabamians have. Reading the book is like listening to a friend describe the great weekend trip she just experienced. It has the same effect, too-it makes me want to pack my bags, hop in the car, and go!
