See Jerusalem in Miniature at Ave Maria Grotto

Cullman, Alabama is a great place to visit. The small North Alabama city has a rich heritage and is worthy of a side trip off Interstate 65. One of my favorite stops in Cullman is Ave Maria Grotto, also called "Jerusalem in Miniature."

Over 125 replicas of famous churches, shrines, and other buildings are located in a beautiful wooded 3-acre park on the grounds of Benedictine Abbey. Brother Joseph Zoettl, a monk who lived on the premises from 1892 until his death in 1961, built the fantasyland over a period of many years. The artist used native rocks and other material found locally for his early constructions, then, as his fame spread, people began to send him materials such as special rocks and semiprecious stones from all over the world.

The miniatures were originally placed in another area on the premises, but the collection eventually outgrew its quarters and had to be moved. The present site was dedicated in 1934; the monk continued to add to it until he was 80 years old in 1958.

Nestled into the hillside is a miniature landscape containing some of the most famous buildings in Jerusalem and Rome, the basilica at Lourdes, the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, and many other replicas.

After you pay a small admission charge and enter through the gift shop, you will be free to wander through the grounds at your leisure. Take your time; you'll want to double back many times and re-visit some of the sites. Every time I visit, I'm overwhelmed by the beauty and intricacy of the displays, which are enhanced by the beautiful Alabama setting.

The Abbey grounds are beautiful and would make a restful stopping place for the weary traveler even without the attraction of the Grotto. The site is well-maintained and easy to access. They welcome tour buses, providing plenty of parking for both buses and cars. The gift shop has snacks as well as souvenirs, and picnic facilities are available beside the parking area.

St. Bernard Prep School is also located on the premises.

To visit, leave I 65 at Exit 308. Turn to the east and follow the signs to the outskirts of town-about a four-mile drive. The Abbey is on your right down a winding road. Drive slowly and enjoy the entire experience.

Ave Maria Grotto is open every day except Christmas from 7:00 AM until dusk.
