Visit Doublehead ResortAre you enjoying our Gulf Coast visit? It's great, isn't it? Unfortunately, even the beach gets old after a while, so let's move to some other great locations. We'll get back to the beach later. For the next few weeks, I want to take you to some other places I've discovered around the Southeast, especially in Alabama. With fall fast approaching, I start thinking about rustling leaves, wood smoke, and cool nights. Imagine sitting on the front porch in a rocking chair, watching the sun glitter on the water. Around you are well-maintained grounds with big trees and rustic-but not primitive-cabins, all set far enough apart not to intrude on your quiet moments. Falling asleep in your chair? Then you can step off the porch to nap in your own hammock, swinging slowly in the gentle breeze.... Sound like somewhere you want to be? Well, I found it, and a lot more besides. Here's where it is: Doublehead Resort is located in northwestern Alabama on 1,100 acres bordering Wilson Lake. Each of the 35 cabins is on the water, with its own pier on the lake. The two-story structures have three bedrooms, fireplace, cable TV (it only LOOKS rustic, folks), two baths, full kitchen, washer, dryer, and grill. Who could ask for more? More? How about horseback riding, pool, 2.5 mile nature trail, bicycle riding, pontoon boats, jet skis? Or guided bird hunts and sporting clay shoots? Tennis, basketball, playgrounds for the children, canoes, paddleboats? You may never want to leave. There is also a large Indian mound on the property-and be sure to ask about how the resort got its name. I won't give it away, but it seems there was this Indian Chief who couldn't decide between two cultures.... The property also includes an incredible meeting lodge with facilities to accommodate just about any size group. Arrangements can be made for meals and/or snacks for meetings, and the building, furnishings, and setting are guaranteed to inspire anyone who visits. I can personally recommend the meeting facilities, having just spent two days in meetings there. I can't wait to go back! Rates vary for the cabins, depending on the time of year. There are also specials such as Valentine's Day package, so check for the time you want to visit. You can call them at (800) 685-9267, or look them up on the 'net at http://www.Doublehead.com. From Interstate 65, get off just south of the Tennessee/Alabama line at the Athens, Alabama exit. Go west on Highway 72 about 30 miles to Highway 101. Turn south, go about 2 miles, then turn right on County Road 314. The resort entrance is just ahead on the right.
